Mark is an environmental professional
Mark is an environmental professional. He has over 30 years of experience including the last ten years as an international trainer on environmental topics. Mark has taught courses in Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Angola, Australia and in the United States on all aspects of the environment. The courses trained other young professionals in their country on maintaining world class environmental performance regardless of location. This involved not only explaining “how” but also “why” we protect the environment. His specialty was waste and remediation but he worked with professionals from every environmental aspect.
Mark brings this experience to the public realm. Mark worked with the Association of Bay Area Governments to champion the Green Business Program which helps small to medium size companies reduce their environmental footprint by using a checklist of the best pollution prevention ideas developed specifically for each business type. Napa’s Green Winery Program is one example. This started with a small pilot program in Napa in 1996. Mark chaired the committee that developed the program and worked to get all 9 Bay Area Counties involved. There are now over 3000 Green Businesses in the Bay Area and the program has gone Statewide.
Mark also served on the Watershed Information Center and helped direct funds to restore fish habitat in the Napa River (Zinfandel bridge replacement). Napa County’s erosion control plans are perhaps the most stringent farming regulations in the world assuring our natural habitat is protected when new vineyards are planted.
Our community is defined one small decision at a time. The beautiful and improving environment we have today is in part due to Mark’s efforts. Mark has demonstrated over the years an ability to balance the needs of the environment with the social and economic needs of our community.

Protecting our Environment: The Green Business Program
Protecting our environment is smart business. Mark has been involved in developing smarter ways to protect our environment since his days on City Council. Mark has overseen the effort to develop the Bay Area Green Business Program, one of California's most effective and innovative pollution prevention programs. The Bay Area Green Business program helps business owners to do the right thing by providing pollution prevention information tailored to their business in a checklist form. The video below tells the story. For more information go to http://www.greenbiz.ca.gov/
